Curious Incident
Autism is a disorder that affects millions of people. In the novel the curious incident of the dog in the night time, the main character, Christopher, has it. Christopher’s autism limits his ability to understand people and events because he has trouble understanding certain things, he gets overwhelmed too easily, and he can’t go to new places very often.
The first reason his autism limits him is because he has difficulty understanding things. Metaphors are an example of something he struggles with. This is shown when he says “ I think it should be called a lie because a pig is not like a day and people do not have skeletons in their cupboards.” This is also shown when he says “And when I try and make a picture of the phrase in my head it just confuses me.” This proves that he has problems with understanding things because of his autism.
The next reason that his autism limits him is because he gets overwhelmed too easily. This is shown when his mother says “And you crouched down on the floor and put your hands over your ears and you were in the way of everyone (Pg. 106).” This shows that he became overwhelmed because of the amount of people in the shop.
The last reason that Christopher’s autism limits his abilities is because he can’t go to new places very often. This is shown when Christopher says “I was scared because if the train went anywhere else it would be somewhere where I didn’t know anybody (Pg. 211).” This shows that he doesn’t like going to new
