"All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is emotion, not reason, that motivates characters in literature." In novels, characters make decisions based on their current state of emotion. These characters aren't thinking their actions through or considering the consequences. This statement is true; in fact this occurs every day in the real world, not just in literature. In the screenplay The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there is a fear of the devil possessing people in the town of Salem. The characters make accusations off of their emotion and don't think of the reality of it all. The main character, Abigail Williams and her group of girls are able to arouse a lot of trouble in the town. One of woman accused of witchcraft was Martha Corey. Her husband accused her of reading books while he was trying to pray. He said he was unable to comprehend his reading until she had stopped her reading. They didn't consider that Walcott wasn't taking proper care of his pigs. People were reacting to their current emotion, fear, and not looking at the facts. This was not the only time that town believed someone who falsely accused another person. Abigail Williams had worked for the Proctors' and had been fired when Elizabeth had found out that Abigail was having an affair with her husband. Abigail still loved him and hated Elizabeth. She hoped that if she was able to get rid of Elizabeth then she could be with John. During court, she had given their new maid Mary Warren a poppet with a needle in it to give to Elizabeth. She drove a needle into herself claiming that Elizabeth's spirit was trying to kill her. When the town arrived at the Proctors'
