Critical Review of Two Academic Papers Relating to Disabilities of tourism and accommodation

This paper aims to critically review two academic papers about disability, tourism and accommodation and explore the issue of the vulnerable groups. There is no doubt that the market of the handicapped traveling has the great potential, and now it still has large developing space. At the time of the flourish in travel industry, it is of great significance to develop the handicapped in journey that can help to boost the travel industry and build a harmonious society. It is vital to analyses the difficulty on the handicapped in journey and suggests the specific measures.

In one article by Matthew Kwai-sang, Bob, Tanya L (2004) state that people with disabilities also have a high level need and desire for tourism while they face many practical and social obstacles that can inhibit their full participation in tourism, but most attraction lacking of accessible transportation, accommodation which could not provide them a fully participate experience. In this paper, author use two main methodological approaches of research methods :in-depth interview and focus group. “Data were collected via six individual inter-views with key informants and nine focus groups. The focus groups had an average of five persons participating and were composed of those with either mobility or visual impairments. Four in-depth inter-views and five focus groups were conducted with people with mobility disabilities, while two in-depth interviews and four focus groups were conducted with people with visual impairments. Study participants included both men (n 1⁄4 35) and women (n 1⁄4 17), ranging in age from 24 to 72.” Matthew Kwai-sang,Bob, Tanya L (2004). Jane and Jane (2003) indicate that in-depth interview is relatively small numbers of individuals being interviewed at length and a good in-depth interview can become naturalistic which also a bit like daily conversation, as a research result that obtain disabilities real innermost feelings. About the focus group Babbie, E. (2001) states that focus groups are a form of qualitative research that as a socially oriented real-life research method and flexible which has high face validity with quick results, costing little to conduct. Whereas there are also some disadvantages of above research methods. Firstly, the researcher has less control over the session than he or she does in individual interviews. Besides, the data are often difficult to analyze, requiring certain skills, there are much differences between groups can be troublesome, sometimes groups can often be difficult to pull together (McNamara, 2012).
This paper shows the research method and result on the topic ”inherent complexity: disability, accessible tourism and accommodation information preferences”.
The paper described the progress and result of the research focusing on the most important factors on accommodation selection for the disabilities. Several research methods were mentioned in this paper, questionnaire-based survey, snowball sampling, individual interview and focus group.
The main used methodology of the research is questionnaire-based survey and snowball sampling. The former uses questionnaire to be filled by random objectives or specified objectives. This method shows quantities of privilege over other methodologies. It’s practical and efficient. Large amounts of information can be collected form a large population in a extremely short time; the questionnaire can be adjusted to serve random people or particular participant; the questionnaire gets the primary date from the researched objectives. On contrast the questionnaire has a lot of drawbacks. For instance, the results of is considered to be affected by the emotions or feelings of the researched objectives; the collected information is determined by the thoughts of the researched objected which means the result may not be true but the subjective feeling of the researched
