“In criminal Justice code of ethics can be thought of as a moral compass that helps one decide how to act in critical moments. Ethics is very important for people that are in a position of power and prominence, as these individuals have the greatest influence on society, the members of the criminal justice system make critical decisions every day and their choices have profound effect on our lives” (ehow, 2010). In this article one will discuss what measures would you take? What are the professional implications? What is the liability issues involved with not reporting the officer? What supervisory issues does this situation present to management and leadership? Why are ethics so important in the law enforcement profession?
What measures would you take? The measures I would take to report this I would write it or report it verbally to the superiors if I am concerned about how I am going to be treated informing them about the situation. It is still one ethical duty to report this situation. If speaking to the supervisor seems extremely uncomfortable one has the duty to report it to other managers or higher supervisors to inform them about the officer unethical behavior so actions can be taken. Even though the officer is highly recognized he still needs to be reported.
What are the professional implications? My professional implications are that I feel that the officer is wrong, but I do not think he should be terminated for the simple fact he is a good person and everyone thinks highly about him. We all make mistakes in life and get beside ourselves.
What is the liability issues involved with not reporting the officer? The liability issues involved with not reporting an officer is that an officer might be subject to disciplinary action, termination of employment, in certain cases civil legal r referral for criminal prosecution.
What supervisory issues does this situation present to management and leadership? As a manager and a leader the supervisor must take actions once this is reported to him whether or not the officer is a good person or not, if everyone highly respects him he still should be punished for their wrong doing. Wrong is wrong no
