Constant Health Issues and Decisions:
Organ Transplants and Alternative Medicines
In our society, we deal with many health decisions and issues constantly. One main issue that we deal with is organ transplants. The problems surrounding organ transplants ranges from low shortages to who actually gets and deserves one. Another health complication is patients relying on alternative medicines instead of doctor’s medicine and recommendations. I will express my moral opinion about both these health issues that we face today.
The first issue I’ll be talking about is a health problem we face all over the world which is organ transplants. One of the biggest things we deal with not just around the world but in America is the shortage of organs. We have a lot of people who do not want to donate their organs after they pass away. I think one of the issues is when we ask people to be donors. We ask people to be donors when they are issued their drivers license. So we are usually asking sixteen to eighteen year olds who are in high school if they would be a donor. I know when I was asked if I was or would be a donor the first thing I thought of was why would I donate my organs? I really was not informed or know the purpose behind it. Somehow people need to inform people the reason and benefits to other of being an organ donor. So maybe going to schools and informing high school students why they should be a donor could be a way. Another thing is people speculate that if they would be taken advantage of if they were in an accident. So if someone was in a car crash and they was an organ donor that the medics would kind of let them die for their organs. This is not true; the medics will do everything in their power to keep them alive. I can still see these people’s perspective and would be spectacle based on hearing stories of this happening to organ donors. So one way to help solve and get more organs would be to educate people to become an organ donor.
Since there is a low amount of organs, there has been talk about buying organs that people don’t need. So people would come in and make an appointment to get one of their organs removed. In return get a good amount of money based on what type of organ they donated. Hospitals would only take the organ if they know that they could survey without it. I really don’t know what to think about this idea. It is a great way to probably increase the amount of organ. The problem with this is that what types of people are going to be donating their organs. I see people like college students or other people who are in need of paying off their loans donating their organs. This is kind of not so bad but could find better ways then to donate an organ. Another problem is drug addicts and very low income people will be the majority that would be donating an organ. I think if people are coming in to sell their organs that they need a physical examination and make sure that they are someone who doesn’t abuse drugs. The only reason I single out drug abusers is because there is a good chance they already damaged their organs. I do not think it would be a great idea to buy organs from people. If they had a pretty good policy on how to do the procedure of selecting who is good enough to sell their organ than possibly. I know that if they just had people come in and lie about why they were selling their organ for. That’s why I think it would be for the best not to buy peoples organs.
Another idea of trying to solve the organ shortages is through genetic engineering. Since we are low on organs, many people have tried and have organs from animals similar to the human anatomy like the pig. The pig is the closes as of size and proportional organs. The problem is that there is a high chance of rejection rate since it is not even a human organ. So to try and solve this problem genetic researchers are genetically change pig genes so that their organs are almost identical to a human organ. This would decrease the
