Unit 2: Computer Systems
Assignment Brief 1
Core Computer Components
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The CPU is the abbreviation for central processing unit.
Sometimes referred to simply as the central processor, but more commonly called processor, the CPU is the brains of the computer where most calculations take place.
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)
A graphics processing unit (GPU) is a computer chip that performs rapid mathematical calculations, primarily for the purpose of rendering images. In the early days of computing, the central processing unit (CPU) performed these calculations.
Motherboard
The motherboard is a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors for other circuit boards to be slotted into.
RAM (Random Access Memory)
Random-access memory is a form of computer data storage. A random-access memory device allows data items to be read and written in roughly the same amount of time regardless of the order in which data items are accessed. PSU (Power Supply Unit)
The power supply is a system that converts AC current from the wall outlet into the DC currents required by electronic circuits. A computer power supply converts AC into multiple DC voltages.
CD-ROM Drive (Compact Disk-Read Only
Memory Drive)
A CD-ROM is an optical disc which contains audio or software data whose memory is read only. A CD-ROM Drive or optical drive is the device used to read them, it uses laser light or electromagnetic waves within or near the visible light spectrum as part of the process of reading or writing data to or fromoptical discs.
HDD/SSD (Hard Drive/Solid State
Drive)
A HDD is a storage device used to store data. Unlike RAM, which requires electrical power to maintain its state, a hard disk drive stores data magnetically. Therefore, it retains its data when the power source is turned off or disconnected.
An SSD is a storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of a hard disk because of its much greater speed.
Input Devices
Keyboard
A keyboard is the set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter data into a computer. Computer keyboards are similar to
Classical Computer Systems: Which Should Be Used? Scott Hager October 27, 2012 Strayer University CIS312: Computer Architectures I Professor Raman Marwah Classical Computer Systems: Which Should Be Used? There are many ways to access information in today’s society by using many different types of computers. We now have supercomputers, mainframe computers, desktops, laptops, and handheld computers which include smart phones and tablets. Each of these computer types has its…
Computer System A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem. Computer Hardware and components Computer hardware is the collection of physical elements that constitute a computer system. Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer, which are divided into different groups such as input…

Editor (GUI?) - editor: creat text file and doesn’t change the original script - save and press run button to run the "editor file" on matlab(have to select the currect folder at current folder on the left side) - "clear" cleans all the above command - don't always relay on the gui, can easily change the value by issuing new command Eg. b= 111 Or right click on the work space. Command History - Shows a record of command issued Problem Setting key word as variable will overwrite…
to do to the external source for example Hackers- computer users attempt to access data files and records using communication networks to plant viruses, divert electronic financial transactions for personal gain. Accidental Damage- Accidental Damage to external sources is a type of damage that is done mistakenly done to the external source for example Electrical power surges and spikes- changes in an electrical power can cause damage to computer hardware, software and stored data files. Internal…
the basis to attend the class. This class is completely academic oriented environment for the student to end up learning some broad knowledge about the Windows 7 operating system. The instructor’s teaching is convincingly visible, as he shares a deep relationship with subject of Computer Science with his educational background, additionally most of the students in the class have broadly evolved the subject in their past, which would be a great asset for that…
components of a computer system such as a monitor, memory chip or keyboard. Software is instructions (computer programs) that make the computer hardware usable. 2. For safe backup of internally stored data, portability and some devices such as CD’s can be re-used, while others such as Z-drives offer a variety of storage options. 3. System software is any computer software which manages and controls computer hardware so that application software can perform a task. Operating systems, such as Microsoft…
Case 2-4 Memo To: Partner From: CA Subject: Going Concern Issues for Canadian Computer Systems Inc. As the Conceptual Framework notes, financial statements are prepared assuming the entity is a going concern and will continue in operation into the foreseeable future. While reviewing audit working papers several issues have arose about CCS’s ability to realize its assets and discharge its liabilities, and the going concern assumption has come into question. After discussing these problems the following…
