Survival is a hard, but natural instinct for all humans. In the book, Night, by Elie Wiesel l, Night, the reader learns about the struggles Elie and his family faced during World War II. The struggles are also seen in the song “Red Sector A” by the band Rush. The novel and the song both express the importance of surviving during difficult times when one feels like giving up, as stated in the song, “All that we can do to help ourselves is to stay alive.” In Elie Wiesel’s novel Night, the beginnings of the Holocaust are shown in the time period of 1944-1945 while also explaining the struggles of having the will to live. In “Red Sector A” written by Neil Peart for his band Rush, the lyrics explain the need to survive and describe about wounds that can never heal. Both literary works expose images that one just cannot forget. One common theme shown in both works is the need for hope and strength to survive. Peart describes, “Days and weeks and months go by. Don’t feel the hunger... Too weak to cry.” In the beginning, Elie had faith and hope, but, towards the end of the novel his faith and hope slowly started to fade as he notices that nothing is changing and nothing is getting any better. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames, which consumed my faith forever (Eliezer 32). In the song “Red Sector A” and in the book, Night, the reader can see how there is clearly puzzlement and confusion. In Night, Elie states: “Was there a single place here where you were not in danger of death?"(Wiesel 37). In
