Abstract Selecting the right communication requires thought when exercising how one will relay a message to a group, individual, or even a child. What they say will also require them to prepare how they communicate their message. There are challenges that can become “barriers that distort the clarity of the message” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, pg. 344). The benefit of communicating clearly is that it leaves no message unclear, no meaning unknown.
Scenario I What communication channel will use? When faced with a large task that will require many departments to communicate laterally with one another, the team should schedule a meeting. Achieving success will require the input of all departments, Sales, Operations, Advertising, Branding, Training, etc. Why is this channel the best choice in this situation? This channel provides face-to-face conversations to occur. Face-to-face communication provides the highest level of communication to occur. “Multiple information cues (words, postures, facial expressions, gestures, intonations), immediate feedback (both verbal and nonverbal) (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 358), give each team member the proper feedback. Also, “horizontal communication saves time and facilitates coordination” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, pg.346. Using power points, videos, presentations, video conferencing to achieve goals, set action plans, deadlines, show progress, are different ways to increase communication What communication channel will you use to convey your strategy to the Vice President of Operations? Once the plan was assembled by the team leader from the departments, he would engage in upward communication to the vice to show his outline of goals. This is the best channel suited and provides face-to-face conversations with the vice president. This communication will encourage the vice president to offer feedback, receive updates, and encourage work. It will allow managers, “communication for ideas on how conditions can be improved” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 346). Both parties confirm communication between what is presented and heard. Scenario II What communication channel to you use to contact the IT department? In this scenario, the best communication channel would be a telephone call. This would include cell phone calls too. Why is this channel the best choice in this situation as well? A quick phone call provides instant communication. Although there is no physical communication (body language, gestures, non-verbal communication cues), you still have verbal communication (intonation, tone of voice, emotion) that will allow the message you are trying to convey be understood.
