Common cell traits
A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.
A prokaryotic cell is a cell without membrane-bound structures (bacteria, pond scum etc.)
A eukaryotic cell is a cell with membrane-bound structures (animals, plants, fungi.)
A cell wall protects the cell, gives the cell shape and is made of cellulose. A cell wall is found in plants, algae, fungi and most bacteria. Animal cells do not have a cell wall.
A cell membrane is the outer covering, the protective layer around ALL cells. For cells with cell walls, the membrane is found inside the call wall. The cell membrane allows food, water and oxygen into the cell, and waste to come out of the cell.
Cytoplasm is a gelatine-like inside-cell membrane, which constantly flows. Also known as protoplasm.
A cytoskeleton is a scaffolding-like structure in a cytoplasm, it helps the cell maintain or change into shape. It is made up of proteins.
A nucleus directs all cell activities, found on a hereditary material called DNA. Usually the largest organelle.
A nuclear membrane separates the nucleus from cytoplasm’s. It control movement in and out of the Nucleus.
The nucleolus is found in the nucleus and contains most of the cells genetic material.
The chromatin is made up of DNA and proteins.
Osmosis is the net movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from areas of a high concentration to areas of low concentrations.
Diffusion is the net movement of a substance by the random
