Russians By Sting

In Sting’s debut solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, includes “Russians” a song that covers most of The Cold War history and the tough talks between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Cold War was a stressful time for the two “superpowers”, the U.S and Soviet Unions, and all those families who where losing loved ones. This song describes how perhaps love is what can stop treacherous things from happening. The chances of a nuclear war happening was very high, the United States was not even aware of that until everything was already over. The tension between the superpowers is what lead them not to be able trust each other because of the fear of one taking over another. Sting mentions on every verse how he hopes that they love their children too, because no loving parent is able to hurt their child no matter what damage they do and will do anything to stop them from getting hurt, even if it involves stopping a very powerful nuclear bomb. In the first verse of “Russians” Sting mentions, “Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you, I don’t subscribe to this point of view, it would be such an ignorant thing to do”. In a party at the Polish Embassy in Moscow, communist leader and leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Krushchev uttered his most famous misinterpret quote, “We Will Bury You”. Of course because of the scary tension between the Soviet Union and the U.S, this scared many Americans into believing that Nikita Krushchev was threatening them. Like Mr. Sting said, you would be ignorant to ignore something like this in a time with such tension surrounding them. Sting’s second verse of “Russians” says, “How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy”. This line is referring Scientist Oppenheimer’s version of the atomic bomb, it is referred as a deadly toy because it is played and used by the military a if it were a toy. Finally in the the third verse, the song mentions, “ There’s no such thing as a winnable war, It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore”. Basically what is being said here is that throughout the 20th century, most of the wars that were fought at that time were not winnable due to
