The Cold War dated from 1945-1991. The Cold War was the result of political and military tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Cold War got its name because both the United States and the Soviet Union both had access to nuclear weapons, and threatened to use them on one another. In 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed ending the Cold War. As far as the world being more safe now that the Cold War is over, no I do not think that is factual. There are still nuclear weapons to be used, but the threat of them being used is just not in affect. Even though when the Cold War ended all the nuclear weapons were said to be dismantled. War is war whether nuclear weapons are involved or not. People still loose lives and damage is still done. The United States still suffers attacks, example is 9-11 which was a terrorist attack that started another war. On this day planes were flown into the twin towers and took the lives of many Americans. The world will never be completely safe, there will always be tension between the Countries. True, the demise of the Soviet Union and the destruction of hundreds of nuclear weapons, those left behind in the former Soviet republics, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and others, have made the world much safer than it had been since the end of World War II.
