There are many significant events that have shaped America as we know it today. The most important event in early American history is the Civil War. The Civil War had a significant economic, political, and social implication. The Civil war of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation we were.
The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. When Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861, he pledged to keep slavery out of the territories which caused seven slave states to secede and thus created the Confederate States of America. By the end of 1861, a million armed men confronted each other along a line stretching from Virginia to Missouri, which began the Civil War. Both the North and the South experienced major victories and defeats. However, by September 1864 with the taking of Atlanta the North had gained the upper hand and the war would officially end on April 9, 1865 ((http://americanhistory.about.com/od/civilwarmenu/a/civiloverview_2.htm))
After the Civil War was over, all was still not well. Everything that had been destroyed by the War had to be rebuilt. The South had to rebuild houses, buildings, farms and stores, while little of the North had been destroyed. The people of the North and South were now living in a horrible time. However, the misery and misfortune would soon come to an end because of the reconstructions of the South and the rebuilding of the North.
When the Civil War ended, salves were freed. Blacks were now United States citizens and they now could vote, go to school, and get jobs that paid money. Unfortunately,
