Short Essay #2: Christology The Biblical basis for Jesus’ humanity was His birth by the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary became pregnant by the spiritual seed of God, which in essence was the very word of God. This is difficult for many people to comprehend because God works within the spiritual realm of humanity. There are two Biblical bases for the deity of Jesus. The first is the Annunciation of Him being brought into existence as the Son of God. The second basis was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Annunciation and birth of Jesus was ordained by God. Jesus was prophesized in the Old Testament and the prophesy of His reality took place in the New Testament. The Angel of the Lord, Gabriel declared unto Mary that she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit. According to Luke 1:26-28: In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” The second basis for His deity is the resurrection of Christ. Jesus was crucified and died as a sacrifice for man’s sins and on the third day of His death Christ arose. This was part of God’s plan to save man from his sins. Jesus was God in the flesh and when He arose from the dead, He defied death. The Hypostatic Union is the teaching that the Word of God became flesh and we call Him Jesus. Jesus was there with God at the very beginning of time according to Genesis 1:1; in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Also John 1: 1-3, reads: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In order to accomplish His mission here on earth he had to ‘lower’ himself into becoming man though he was God. Jesus is both God and Man meaning he is co-substantial with God and shared a very intimate and loving relationship with man when he walked amongst us in the flesh and intercedes even today for us spiritually. Because God loves man, He needed to redeem man because of our sin nature. The law required that nearly everything be cleansed with blood and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. The blood of lambs and goats was not a sufficient for our redemption therefore Jesus became that perfect sacrifice. To deny the divinity of Christ one would have to welcome the heresy of Arianism.
