Christo and Jeanne-Claude

Christo and Jeanne-Claude was a married couple that worked together to create environmental artwork. They created these works of art together all over the world. Some of the most famous pieces of art that they created were the Running Fence, The Umbrellas, or The Gates. The Running Fence was a G24 mile long veiled fence that extended across the hills of Sonoma and Marin counties in California. Along with the Running Fence, The Gates also was near 24 miles long. The Gates consisted of a series of vinyl gates that stretched throughout Central Park in New York. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s other famous project was The Umbrellas. The Umbrellas was a series of umbrellas stretching 12 miles long in Japan and another series in the US stretching 18 miles long. After reading about all of these projects I came to the conclusion that The Gates throughout Central Park in New York fascinated me the most.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude got approved for The Gates project on January 22, 2003 and finally completed it on February 12, 2005. They conceived the idea of this project after living in New York for many years and noticing the abundance amount of people leisurely walking throughout Central Park on a daily basis. Central Park was part of their life and they were committed in completing a project in New York City, and that is exactly what they did.
The Gates was placed in Central Park not only for personal reasons but because it was the perfect place for this project. Central Park was a vast 843 acre park with 23 miles of walkways that were highly populated. Along the walkways Christo and Jeanne-Claude had 7,503 gates spread out to cover all 23 miles. These gates were 16’ tall and varied from 5’6” to 18’ wide depending on the width of the walkways. The majority of these gates were spaced out by 12’ intervals. The detail that made The Gates unique was that the poles as well as the free hanging cloth were bright colored saffron. The saffron color really popped out with all the trees as its background.
