Choose a play where you found the ending moving or disturbing.
Explain how, although the dramatist prepares us for the ending, nevertheless when it came, you were still moved or disturbed by it.

Hamlet is a play written by William Shakespeare that has a disturbing ending due to Hamlets actions. Hamlet is a young prince in Denmark, who is looking to avenge his father’s death by killing Claudius, the new king of Denmark. Claudius murdered Old Hamlet to become the king. Once old Hamlet was dead, Claudius, Hamlets Uncle, Married Gertrude to become king.
At the end of the play, Hamlet has a duel with Laertes. This is surprising to the reader as Laertes and Hamlet used to be good friends, however Hamlet killed Polonius (Laertes father) by accident. “Give me your pardon sir” This quote shows that Hamlet is trying to be respectful to Laertes and also shows that he acknowledges that he has done wrong. Later in the scene, Hamlet said it was his madness that had killed Polonius, as the reader knows that is Hamlet was of Sound mind that he would never have done such a thing. “Was’t Hamlet wronged Laertes? Never Hamlet” The reader also gets the impression that Hamlet is not of sound mind as he speaks in third person about himself.
During the duel scene, we discover that Claudius had poisoned laertes’ foil and Hamlets drink, by putting a jewel covered in poison in it. The duel begins and Hamlet wins the first hit but declines to drink. He hits again and the Queen, Gertrude, raises the cup and drinks – poisoning herself. The writer prepares us for the poisoning of the queen, as Shakespeare is very specific about telling us that a poison covered jewel had been thrown into the drink.
