In our world most of countries give basic education for their citizens for free. Why is education so important for a person in our society? There are so many answers. Education makes people become smart, education makes people improve manners, and education makes people ascend to a higher social class. Education makes people achieve self-esteem; get the real benefit for life. Education develops and improves technology. That’s why if a country will not develop its education it will have no future. If one person is not educated she or he will be foolish. But what is the really significance or purpose for education for the one being educated in our society? For a realistic and simple answer for most people is improving social class and income, and making a person has a space in the social network. So that most of people and families attach importance and value education. That makes people only interested in the utilitarian side of education. Some of people will neglect that during the educational process they may lose something they had before, or change their axiology. My parents only took the utilitarian side of education, that’s the main reason they hope me to continue my education. In my opinion, education is a way to improve my personal life, but it’s not the only way. Education has more purports in my life. I started my school when I was almost 7 years old in China. I was born in Chengdu, where is the capital of Sichuan province. It is also known as the “country of heaven”, a phrase also often translated as “the land of abundance”. When I was young my parents were so strict, and pushed me hard to study. There is a mind set in most of Chinese parents “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela). I started to play accordion when I almost was 5 years old. At that time I had to practice it every day almost 3 hours, on weekends may practice for more hours. Each year there was a merit system. I had to practice specific kind of music to pass different levels to get the certificate for each level. There are 10 levels for the amateurish person who will not play it as a job or profession such as me. When I began going to elementary school in China, there were two most important subjects at school: Chinese and math. My parents required me to get 100 for each of them. At that time the most fearful thing was teachers telling me to ask my parents to come to school. It is legal for parents physically punish children in China. So after almost every parents meeting I got punishments. There is so much homework after school every day; it took us more than 2 hours per day for homework at elementary school. I didn’t have fun childhood in my life. Most of the time, I spent on practicing accordion and doing homework. At school teachers measured good students only with scores on test. At that time my teacher was the god of my world. If you can have 100 scores on each of your test, you are the best student at school. We had to memorize a lot for the tests. That’s maybe why I have good memories for a short period of time. I can memorize whole main ideas of the book for one semester at a short time to pass and get good grades, but after the test maybe just 5 hours if I had the same test I may don’t remember anything. The main point of Chinese students is get good grades on the tests, that’s why most of Chinese students are good at with tests. When I was almost 18 years old my whole family moved to Queens, New York, I started go to school here. I got good grades on my most of tests, especially for math and Chinese at the first semester here. Except biology and history, because there were so many vocabularies. In English class, teachers just gave us the novels to read. It’s unbelievable in China. I love reading. Almost all kinds of
