0-3 MONTHS
New born babies have very little if any control over their body’s .they is scrunched up into foetal position; movements are reflex rather than deliberate. Babies turn their heads to search for nipple or teat if their cheek is touched, suck and swallow, try to make stepping movements if they are held upright with feet on a firm surface. They will startle in response to a sudden sound or bright light. They will stretch their arms suddenly and bring them in if they feel they are falling. They can recognise their mothers voice and smell. They will cry if they are hungry in pain, need feeding, changing or just cuddling.
SENSES
Babies use their senses from birth they respond to sour or sweet tastes
HEARING AND COMMUNICATION
Crying is a babies only means of communication. Different cries for different meanings develop very quickly. sounds make babies jump but they enjoy listening to different sounds.
Sight – babies can focus at 20-25 cm which is close facial contact distance otherwise fuzzy.
ONE MONTH By this time babies need firm but gentle handling constant holding when awake, lots of cuddles, touch, talking singing to when awake and also feeding, bathing and changing. They also like to listen to music watch bright colours and mobiles within 20-25 cm of their faces .
PHYSICAL
The physical movements of a one month old baby are he-she can lay on its back with head to one side , arms and legs on face side out stretched. The baby’s head lags when pulled when pulled up into sitting position. When the baby is held sitting the back is a full curve. He –she have primitive reflexes such as rooting and sucking , stepping and grasping are still present.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL
The responses of a one month old baby are responds positively to main carer, imitates facial expressions, stares at bright shiny objects, gazes intently at carers, social smile at carers [by 6 weeks]
INTELLECTUAL
A baby blinks in reaction to bright lights ,turns to soft light , stares at carer, cries when basic needs require attention.
COMMUNICATION
A baby kicks legs and waves arms
