Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 6-22 Army Leadership defines leadership as “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.”1 In order to provide great leadership, leaders must first have a good strong character. Values, beliefs, and experiences shape our character. Personalities and behaviors reflect our character. Shared values amongst people in an organization and the discipline to live up to those values are vital to great leadership and an organization’s success.
Great leadership begins with leaders that have a good strong moral and ethical character. Moral and ethical values determine what is right and gives us motivation to do what is appropriate. The Army Values represent a common understanding of the principles and standards important for individual and unit success in the Army. 2 Leaders that adhere to the Army Values have the tools to make sound decisions when put in difficult situations. Leaders with good moral and ethical character develop and lead their subordinates to do the same. Leaders that do not live the Army Values and have a bad character tolerate behaviors that may disrupt the good order of an organization.
Living the Army Values and developing one’s character requires self-discipline. Discipline is a mindset and means doing the right thing at the individual level.3 Disciplined leaders do what is required and continue to develop their character by living the Army Values and seeking self-improvement. Strong leaders encourage
