1. I think that the word “saffron” is a kind of color. They are using the word in the tense of describing the glow of the sunset. The word actually means

2. I think the word “countenance” means the appearance of what they are talking about. In this case they are using the appearance of the Sphinx. The word actually means
a) Appearance, especially the look or expression of the face: a sad countenance.

c) Calm facial expression; composure.

3. I think the word “dispersion” means to disappear or to not be seen because when I look at this word I can see the word “disappear” or “disperse” and that normally means disappear. The word actually means a) Also, dispersal. An act, state, or instance of dispersing or of being dispersed. b) Optics -the variation of the index of refraction of a transparent substance, as glass, with the wavelength of light, with the index of refraction increasing as the wavelength decreases. the separation of white or compound light into its respective colors, as in the formation of a spectrum by a prism. c) Statistics the scattering of values of a variable around the mean or median of a distribution.

4. I think the word “languish” means that they were living in a certain environment and they really don’t like it. In the story they say that they languishing in a certain environment and they say it was in helpless-misery. The word actually means
a) becoming languid, in any way.
b) Expressive of languor; indicating tender, sentimental melancholy: a languishing sigh.
c) Lingering: a languishing death.

5. I think the word “subterranean” is when there is something underground. I think this because “sub”
