I would like to address the ludicrous idea of music censorship. When most of us thinks of censorship of any kind the first amendment comes to mind. Although many rights are valued in the U.S., the freedom of speech is highly regarded and greatly manipulated. The first amendment states, "Congress shall make no law representing an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and petition the Government for a redress of grievances." You may think that the censorship of music is prohibited based on the law of our constitution except it's not the government doing the censoring on it's own, it's special interest groups.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. mentions in his article “2 Live Crew, Decoded” (523).the outrage that was brought to our governments attention. There can be nothing worse than being misunderstood because of the use of slang. The group was being censored during their performances for being too provocative. Ultimately the federal government began to censor their music.(523-24) Scapegoat accusations made based on the influence of music, the objection of the artists, and the attempts to censor music simply relieves people from being held accountable for there own actions. Ozzy Ozbourne was sued by the parents of a 19-year-old boy who felt their son committed suicide after listening to Ozbourne's song "Suicide Solution". One of the most famous cases of music censorship, police in Dade County, Florida arrested three retailers for selling 2 Live Crew tapes to children under the age of 18 in
Censorship in Music Many people probably think that only music, in recent years, has been censored. In fact, music has been censored since the beginning of the twentieth century. Censorship in music was meant to block lyrics that were offensive to anyone, or lyrics the government didn’t approve of. Still today, they use censorship in music because people have the right to not be offended, but people also have a right to freedom of speech. Censoring music is a bad thing because it goes the…

Brady Clapp Ms. Griffin English 9, Period 1 May 9, 2013 Is Music Killing Our Kids? "In Center point, a small Texas town, a young man took his life while listening to the music of AC/DC. He was not the first” according to Carma H. Shoemaker. Some people believe that music causes kids to fall into a deep depression or might encourage suicide. Some people even say that some “Rock” artists encourage kids to take their lives. In 2004 there were over 5000 lawsuits against multiple rock artists because…

It happens in a variety of different situations including speech, books, music, films, the press, radio, television, and the Internet. of 1934 ("Federal communications commission," 2012). It replaced the Federal Radio Commission (FRC) which regulated radio use from 1926-1934 (Goodman, 1999). Many can argue that censorship is not always necessary, particularly when it comes to music. Music censorship is most popularly known for the “radio edit.” More times than not, the version of songs you hear on the radio is different than the album version in terms of length but more so with words. Inappropriate words are commonly bleeped, removed…
Banning music for the purpose of enforcing morality is called Music Censorship. Banning or censorship of popular music began in early 40s to about the 70s with the progression of Rock and Roll and R&B. Music inspires a form of emotion that at a simple level helps to provide amusement and the power to cause major innovations in culture. Music’s influence frightens some individuals that are scared of the change to morals and attitudes. Censoring of music has made a form of expression banned. Some…
attention of the Catholic church, which began to recognize that this was an important invention. As a result of this, the Pope required that the church approve any and all books before they were allowed to be published. Although the church had been censoring books for a long time before the invention and popularity of the printing press, this is when it really began to become clear what a tight hold the church had on different types of entertainment and even knowledge in some cases ("Gutenberg's Legacy")…
awareness of pressing and urgent issues. Though there are many positive influences, there are many negative influences as well. Some of the more heated debates of the negative influences of hip hop are that it glorifies violence, and the fact that the music sexualizes women and degrades them as well. Attached to the negative outlook on hip hop, there are also many stereotypes assumed by society towards this type of culture…
supported by a long line of Supreme Court decisions. “The Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment's protection of artistic expression very broadly. It extends not only to books, theatrical works and paintings, but also to posters, television, music videos and comic books; whatever the human creative impulse produces” (What is censorship?, 2006). “Violence, bans and seizure of content are just some of the methods used to directly censor and suppress people and their ideas” (Censorship, violence…
