“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanders, the swindlers they won’t inherit the kingdom of god. Don’t deceive yourself it’s not right.” Phil Robertson
Should this type of speech be protected under the 1st Amendment and should Phil
Robertson be fired for saying this? In my opinion I believe that he should be fired because he showed bad role model characteristics, that opinion & the words he used can get anybody hurt, and many other people have been fired from their job or suffered consequences for saying such words as those.
First reason is bad role model characteristics. A woman sacked as a communications director of the New York based internet empire InterActive Corp. for having made a puerile tweet that linked AIDS with race. Justine Sacco was on her way to South Africa and it was during the 11hour flight from London to Cape Town is when she became the latest example of power on Twitter to destroy everyone who cause offense through her unthinking use of social media site. Justine tweeted on December
13 @10:19 A.M “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”
Justine’s tweet turned her into a notorious Twitter superstar while she was in air. In her long flight to South Africa she became an internet phenomenon her offending remark
was retweeted 2,000 times. On twitter a hashtag has gone viral saying
#HasJustineLandedYet and Justine was in deep trouble. She deleted her remark and her whole account after landing, but by then it was already too late. Justine lost her job for what the company called “hateful statements.”
Second reason is it can get anybody hurt. “I know a man who is firm he’s firm in his pants, he’s firm in his shirt, his character is firm but most of all, his belief in you, the students of Bethel, is firm. Jeff Kuhlman is a man who takes his point and pounds it in. If necessary, he’ll take an issue and nail it to the wall. He doesn’t attack in spurtshe drives hard, pushing and pushing until finallyhe succeeds. Jeff is a man who will go to the very endeven the climax, for each and everyone of you. So vote Jeff Kuhlman for
A.S.B VicePresident he’ll never come between you and the best our high can be” This speech was read to over 600 students at Bethel High School, ages 1418 during an
A.S.B assembly on April 26, 1986. Matthew Fraser was suspended for 3 days and got his speaking privileges taken away from for graduation. Frasers father wasn't very happy about this so he sued Bethel School district 403. for the violation of his sons 1st amendment right to freedom of speech. When they got to the local court, they agreed with the Frasers and gave them the money. The school district still didn't agree so they appealed and took it up to the State court. State court had the same ruling and the
Frasers still were innocent. The school district still didn't agree therefor they appealed to the highest court of them all. The Supreme court. Finally, the school won the case because he violated the school districts BHS disciplinary rule “conduct which materially and substantially interferes with the educational process is prohibited, including the use
