Understanding the principles and functions of assessment

The functions of assessment are about assessing situations, creating plans for further development, identifying an individual or groups training need. It is looking at ways of sharing your skills and preparing colleagues to work safely and effectively.
Assessment is important as it gives an insight to a person’s perception of development/training. It will also show how competent a person is when given an opportunity to learn. It is essential that you have looked and identified the persons need so that the right support and training schedule is given. An assessor would need to follow set requirements and standards.
When planning an itinerary you will need to look at the right way to deliver the training effectively. It will need to be straightforward and easy to follow. Presentation is also a key factor.
Using all of the above will ensure an effective assessment of standards, the right support and equal opportunity. It also gives the reassurance that they have gained a good knowledge of understanding, competency and confidence in completing their certification.

Define key concepts and principles of assessment
The key concepts is that it enables the assessor to ascertain if the learner has gained the required understanding, skills and knowledge to complete their course.
The concept of assessment is what is included as a whole process.
When assessing you need to be
Fair
Approachable
Supportive
Able to guide the learner to manage themselves safely in an environment which could put others at risk.
You will need to work with the learner and support them through the learning process, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.
There are also different stages in the key concepts and they are;
Accountability – The assessor needs to be accountable to the learners and in the workplace so that the assessor is carrying out their job role efficiently, safely and correctly. The assigned learners will also need to be given enough information to explain why they are there, what the assignment is about and how to pass. It is important to the assessor that he can see they understand and are benefiting from the course.
Whilst assessing a course you are given a level of trust from your employers that you are accountable and are able to deliver and provide training to the best of your abilities.
Initial assessment – or Formal or summative – The assessor will need to see what level the learner has prior to the assessment. He will need to test their knowledge and competency.
It will also be needed if the learner has any special needs, is dyslexic or hard of hearing
Formative – is something that is ongoing, test the levels of knowledge and understanding to see what they have remembered and learnt. Observe progress.
Summative – Will be at the end of the assessment, they look back at what they have learnt, see their level of skill has evolved and discovered what they are taking away at the end of the course.
Analysing – The assessor will need to be constantly monitoring the stages of improvement and test their ability. He will also need to ensure that he has followed the correct procedures, policies and protocols to provide safe training.
Progress – When assessing, the assessor needs to inform the learners that once they have completed part of an assignment in the correct way only then they can move on to the next step. It has to be achieved to a high standard.
The outcome for the learner is that they are reassured that they have gained a good knowledge of understanding, competency and confidence in completing their certification.
