Introduction In the movie, When a Man Loves a Woman, the main characters are a family consisting of a mother (Alice), father (Michael), and two young daughters (Jesse and Casey). Alice struggles with an alcohol addiction that negatively affects her children, her husband and herself. Michael is a pilot and therefore isn’t home for long hours or even days at a time. He is still very much in love with his wife and has even raised Jesse (the older child) as his own. Alice seems to be a charismatic, loving mother and wife in the beginning scenes but as the film unravels a different side of her begins to emerge. Michael is often gone leaving Alice to care for the home and children alone (besides help during the day from a nanny named Amy). For the most part Alice hides her drinking when Michael is away but when he is gone flagrantly becomes drunk even in front of the children and Amy. Michael starts to notice more and more what a problem Alice’s drinking is until it all comes to a head in a scene where Alice comes home wasted, slaps Jesse, and falls through their glass shower doors. Michael had always known Alice liked to drink and was used to “fixing her up” after a night out but it was hard to ignore that she had a serious problem any longer. Alice agrees to go to rehab where she goes through detox and begins her road to recovery. Michael stays home and deals with the damage left in her wake. When Alice returns home from rehab she struggles with sober living and maintaining her relationship with her husband. After the tension and fighting that ensues becomes too much for the both of them to handle they go through a separation but do reconcile in the end after Alice successfully reaches 6 months of sobriety.
Family Overview A family of origin is the family one grows up in and a nuclear family is the family one currently lives with. In When a Man Loves a Woman the girls, Jesse and Casey, have the same nuclear family and family of origin. The family unit would consist of Alice, Michael, Jesse and Casey. For a brief time Jesse may have lived with her mom and biological father or her mom alone but in the long haul she would most likely (as long as Michael and Alice stay together) have lived with Michael, Alice and Casey for the longest while growing up. The nuclear family changes for the girls and the parents when Alice goes to rehab and when Michael and Alice separate, but this change is
