Case 18 Robin Hood

1 What is their mission? What should it be?
Remove Prince John from power by freeing King Richard from his imprisonment.
Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.
Take out the Sheriff.

2 What are the objectives and what should they be?
Robin Hood has to form structure within his organization so that it can continue to grow and prosper.
Gain skilled workers.

3 What are the strategies and what should they be?

Corporate- To keep pushing forward in there mission of taking out the sheriff and the King.

Business- To find as many people to help the cause as possible. Also to acquire as many resources as possible.

Functional- To restore order and become competent and one unit.

SWOT: Strengths
The group has a strong leader in Robin and the farmers and townspeople are loyal to him.
Robin Hood has gained strength in numbers. His band is constantly increasing with men traveling from all over England to join.
The men are highly skilled in archery.
A strong team of managers

Weaknesses
The sheriff has the support of Prince John.
The organization is growing in size, however, revenues are declining
The food and supplies in the forest are being depleted at a rapid rate caused by the continuous growth of the group of men.
Difficult to prevent the band from being infiltrated by spies. Opportunities
The Merry Men could kill the sheriff therefore ending his reign of Nottingham.
The men could be taught to grow additional fruits and vegetables in the forest to help subsidize the lack of game available in the forest.
Expansion of the operation to geographical areas to the north, south, east and west of Sherwood Forest.

Threats
If a transit tax is implemented Robin could lose the backing of the local farmers and village people.
Though Robin's band is growing at an uncontrollable rate, the sheriff's forces are becoming stronger and more organized.
There are so many men in Robins he cant recognize half of them

1 4. How are they presently implementing their strategies?

a. Capable organization- Structure
Anyone is aloud to join the group who is looking to be part of the cause.
Some managers in charge of specific areas.

Recruitment/Personnel
Robin Hood had to find allies to join his group. Robin ruled making most of the important decisions. Little John restored and help discipline while keeping order of the men, as well as training the men in skilled archery. Will Scarlet had the duties of Intelligence and scouting. He also shadowed the sheriff and his men making sure he knew what they were planning next. He knew the plans of wealthy merchants and tax collectors. Scarlock was in charge of finances and the conversion of money. He also found suitable hiding places for the surplus while the Miller’s son provisioned the band Merry Men

b. Budget resources- Allocation and Control for resources
As the population of Merry Men increased food became harder to come by. Food like game and supplies had to be obtained from other villages. When revenues began to decline a key reason was the purchasing of food and supplies.

Training and development of people
Little John did most of the Training of the men in regards to archery efficiency.

c. Support systems- Information systems
Farmers and people from outlying villages that supported there cause.

Policies, rules and guidelines
It was important that guidelines were set because of the amount of men that had accumulated.

Functional area activities such as accounting etc.
Discipline and order was becoming harder to control with the growing number of Merry Men. Robin thought a change in policy of confiscation of goods to a fixed transit tax.

Robin hood made almost all of the important decisions, however, he delegated certain tasks to certain individuals, this means he could be known as a democratic leader.
