Discuss the effects of three different discriminatory practices on individuals using health and social care services
Case study 1
In a residential home a carer says to Laurence ‘Mrs Sinclair is coming back next. She is so miserable and so overweight.’

If this was to happen in a real life situation, it could have a huge effect on Mrs Sinclair, the carer, and the practise itself. This would have an impact on Mrs Sinclair because if she found out what the carer had said about her then it could have a negative impact on her self-esteem and result in her becoming very self-conscious. It may also cause her to become embarrassed and not comfortable being at the residential care home and result in her not wanting to go back. This means that she would not be receiving the care that she needs and could lead to other complications. It could also make Mrs Sinclair very upset as she might think that the carer that she thought she could trust is talking about her to people behind her back and being horrible about her. This situation could also have a negative impact on the carer them self, because if a more senior member of staff found out about what they said then it could result in them losing their job. Also if Mrs Sinclair found out about what they carer said then it could make the carer feel ashamed and guilty about what she said. This situation may also lead to the carer losing respect and even losing some friends, this might make the carer feel as if they were people pushed to the side.

Case study 2
While Patricia was on her work experience at a hospital she was going through appointment letters sent in by local GPs. When she had read that one patient was HIV positive she thought ‘gay’ and grimaced, and put the letter at the bottom of the pile, meaning the person wouldn’t be seen until the following week.

If this was a real life situation then it could have a massive impact on the patient with HIV, because the patient is not going to be seen until the following week. This may make the patient feel unwanted and pushed aside as there have been many other patients before them. Also there could be something seriously wrong with the patient but may not be treated in the officiant way because it was left another week. It could also have an effect on Patricia as she could have helped the HIV patient by trying to get the nearest appointment and could have helped the patient with their condition. It could also have a big impact on Patricia because her manager or other employees then she could potentially get fired and suspended from working within a hospital. This would affect her because she may never be able to work in a hospital again as this would be on her record and other hospitals may not want to take her on as they might not be able to trust her. If this situation was to happen in real life it could have a negative impact on the hospital itself. It may give the hospital a bad reputation and change people’s opinion on the hospital. This may lead to people not wanting to be referred to the specific hospital and ask to be referred to somewhere else. If people was asking to be referred to
