The Call of The Wild, by Jack London, is about the transformation of a pampered, gentle, house dog into a wolf. He starts off loved, cared for, and he had a good life. Then the protagonist becomes a hardened killer. Buck is no longer a gentle loving dog. Now he is a wild animal. "During the four years since his puppyhood he had lived the life of a sated aristocrat" (London 5). Buck was the king. He was bigger, stronger, smarter, and even better loved than any other dog on his home in California. Buck was very happy and felt like he had a purpose. He fears nothing, and trust humans. He is well fed and taken care of, a picture perfect life. Then, he is kidnapped by the gardener's assistant to meet the need for large dogs in the Yukon gold rush. His life as he knows it is turned upside down. Buck begins to change when he is sold to Francois and Perrault. His friend makes an innocent mistake, and is devoured by a pack of dogs. This is how he learns the law of club and fang. “By virtue of his own strength and prowess, surviving triumphantly in a hostile environment where only the strong survive." (London 21). He knows that from this point onward, only the strong will survive. He also learns that a man with a club is invisible. He no longer feels anything for humans, he will never love another, and he will only respect them if they have a weapon. He begins to enjoy his work, and learns everything he needs to know about living in the Yukon. He will respect only the fair humans and will never trust new people ever again. Buck is no longer even remotely domestic. He sees the Neanderthal more often, and the call to the wilderness is stronger than ever. The only thing that keeps him form leaving is his love for John Thornton. When he and his friends are brutally murdered by natives, buck
