On July 7,2011, The Wall Street Journal announced in an article on the ethical conflict facing the large corporation known as Starbucks. As reported by the President of the union of Chile, union workers are not satisfied and annoyed with the worthless employee morale they are experiencing in their workplace environment. Starbucks employees were said to have starting wage of $2.50 hourly and that has not been adjusted for eight years. The average price for lunch in Chiles is $5.00 and while managers are allowed a $50.00 lunch bonus the employees are left with two free coffees per day. With this being said, you can understand the perceptions that these unionized employees are feeling.

The consequences and the effect from Starbuck’s failure to accommodate its employees in Chile leads to the union taking action and proposing demands for benefits, monthly lunch bonus and full coverage health insurance for employees. Starbucks feels that the demand override Chile’s business tendencies and beneficial expectancy has been met. Union employees, from 30 Starbucks and 31 Chilean took action and prepared to go on strike for several days that could cause a negative and a downfall economic impact for the Starbuck’s franchise.

According to the article, this is not the first time Starbucks has conflicted with their union workers. Workers in New Zealand, Europe, and in the United States have also had disputes with the company. I truly believe if Chiles succeeds in their pursuit, it can cause a domino effect.
