Unit 15 - (P6) - Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Introduction
In this task I have been asked to prepare a leaflet supporting others just starting to plan their careers. In the leaflet I would explaining the definition of CPD, and why you should keep a CPD record. I would lastly identify a professional body for the career choice I have chosen which is Institute for Learning for Teachers. What Is CPD
CPD stands for continuing professional development and is a combination of approaches; ideas and techniques that will an individual manage their own learning and growth. CPD purely means supporting people in the workplace to understand more about the environment in which they work, the job they do and how they are able to do their job better. CPD can be an individual’s personal ambition to enhance her or hers career prospects or to simply feel more confident about their work and make it more personally fulfilling. The focus of CPD is firmly on results. Why You Should Keep A CPD Record?
CPD helps you turn accountability into a positive opportunity to identify and achieve your own career objectives. At least once a year, it’s recommended that you review your learning over the previous 12 months, and set your development objectives for the coming year. By reflecting on the past and planning ahead for the future in this way it s makes development more precise and easier to measure. It is beneficial of keeping a CPD recorded as its can boost and individual confidence, strengthen their professional credibility and help them more creative in tackling new challenges. A. What are the CPD compulsory requirements that the members of the professional body must complete? In the institute for Learning for Teachers a member would need to answer yes to these questions below: * Have you undertaken professional development activities this year? * Have you reflected on the learning you have gained from these activities? * Have the activities and the reflection made a difference to how you teach or train? * Can you show evidence of this difference and the impact it has made to learners, colleagues or the organisation in which you work?
A member would need to show that they have spend at least 30 hours each year (or pro-rata if you are a part-time teacher or trainer, with a minimum of 6 hours per year) on professional development. This needs to be declared to IfL by 31 August every year.

B. What types of evidence is acceptable to show that members have met the minimum CPD requirements?

•Reading relevant journal articles or reviewing books
•Training courses or formal development or study
•Peer review, mentoring or shadowing
•Online learning including engagement in discussion forums and blogs
•Viewing and reviewing television programmes, documentaries and the internet
•Teachers and Trainers talk about what constitutes CPD.

C. Summarise a case study of a member who completed their CPD record

Tui Palmer is an employability skill tutor at Working Links, a public and voluntary organisation that works in some of the most deprived areas of Great Britain.
