Most Americans relate bureaucracy with delay, waste and runaround according to the book. They have a general dislike do the distrust in the government but do understand the necessity of it.
2. Is it possible to imagine a democracy in a mass society without bureaucracy?
I do not think so. The framers never mentioned bureaucracy. Yet I don’t think they were prepared for the growth of the nation that has occurred either. The Insterstate Commerce Commission and Department of Labor were both necessary additions due to massidve industrialization. Regulation was required, Federal Trade Commission was created. The Great Depression brought on the emergence of the welfare state.
3. Can the federal bureaucracy be made more efficient? More accountable? More representative of the American people? To what extent are these goals consistent with one another?
I personally think it can be streamlined and made more efficient. I think that for one it should be regulated by an outside source ran by citizens. I also think the wasteful spending should definitely be streamlined. The checks and balance system in place should go through a major overhaul. I think the current system is a joke. There is no real accountability. It is just a pass the buck type system. When it comes to representing the people as a whole it is getting better by adding more diversity into the Congressional arena but still has a long way to go. I think the priorities of the government should be reevaluated to the concern of the American people and not the world as a whole. I think we should take care of and be more concerned with ourselves first and then others from a country stand point. I think government officials do not look at it this way and are looking at it mostly from a monetary viewpoint. Often I
