Bullying Bullying isn’t an easy thing to deal with. Millions of people suffer from bullying each year, and the number continues to grow. With such a large portion of the world being affected by bullying, it has received a large amount of attention, however not necessarily enough to stop bullying altogether. Bullying still continues to occur, and now takes on different forms rather than just psychical bullying, it can also come in the form of cyber bullying, or even emotional bullying. Whichever form of bullying you look at makes no difference, bullying is bullying and it is a very serious issue that needs to be dealt with. One very common form of bullying is psychical bullying, and is often seen as the go to form of bullying when we think of bullying. Some people don’t realize how prominent psychical bullying still is in today’s schools. “1 out of 7 kids are bullied in school each day”, this is a statistic from an organization against the act of bullying, and when you think of that number it is truly baffling just how many student are affected by this epidemic. There are many different reasons and theories of why exactly bullies bully, but a common understanding is that bullies bully because it makes them feel better about themselves. This however isn’t always the case, many people who bully today bully based on calculated decisions which improve their own likeness in the eyes of others, rather than just themselves. Coming from my personal observations the past week in my own clique I realized that bullying was a much more prominent issue than I once thought. A big factor of this is when is bullying considered to be bullying and when is it just messing around. In my own clique there seemed to be confusion between this, from my observation I noticed that some things said to others intended to be jokes actually had negative effects on the person the “joke” was intended for. As for psychical bullying, it wasn’t nearly as prominent, however it did occur and I noticed it was almost always directed towards one specific student in my group. To me after realizing this I found the need to stick up for my friends being bullied, and I am proud of my choice. Another common form of bullying would be emotional bullying. Emotional bullying can come in different forms, and unlike psychical bullying it isn’t always intended to be bullying. Many forms of emotional bullying occur in cliques where the bully thinks the victim is his friend and likes his “jokes”, however in most of these cases he victim is generally too demoralized or rather not wanting to go against their clique to stick up for themselves. “Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant.” This is a statistic from a reputable source against bullying of all forms, and in my opinion I find his statistic very surprising. The fact that emotional forms of bullying are constant throughout all grades is believable, however the fact that psychical bullying begins to generally decline in high school is what surprises me. Coming from personal experience I have a form of disability know as anosmia, and this disability causes me to not have a sense of smell. In other words I don’t have a sense of smell, and have never had
