Interpersonal intelligence- ability to read, empathize & understand others. Stroke- emotional response one gets in a comm interaction that has a positive/negative effect on feelings about oneself/others. People engage in comm w/ others in the hope the outcome might lead to 1. Mutural trust 2. Mutual pleasure 3. Psych well-being. The comm exchange is a means of sharing info about things /ideas/ tasks/ selves. Organizational development(OD)- aim is to open emotional/ task-oriented comm in groups in a work environment. Directive behavior- leaders who give detailed rules/ instructions & monitor closely that they are followed. Supportive behavior- leaders who listen/comm/recognize & encourage their followers. Total quality management- focuses on creating a more responsible role for the worker by distributing decision making power to the people closest to the problem, empowering employees to initiate continuous improvements metacommunication- nonverbal message that suggests a message without stating it. Visual kinesic comm- gestures, winks,smiles,all kinds of body movements. Vocal kinesic comm- intonation, projection, resonance of the voice. Listening depends on your abilities to receive/ decode verbal & nonverbal messages. Casual listening- listening for pleasure listening for info- listening in search of data/ material intensive listening- listening to obtain info, solve problems, or persuade. Empathetic listening- listening to others in an attempt to share their feelings/emotions. Bad listening habits: faking attention, allowing disruptions, overlistening, stereotyping, dismissing subjects as uninteresting, failing to observe nonverbal aids. Flat organizational structure- in this structure comm across organization chart becomes more important than comm up & down in a top heavy hierarchy. Role- tasks employees assume involve power/ authority that surpasses their former position on the organization chart. Status- ones formal position in the organizational chart. Characteristics of Effective Groups: Common Goals, Role perception, Longevity, size, status,group norms, leadership. Task Force- team of workers generally given a single goal and limited time to achieve it. Quality assurance team- team that focuses on product or service quality: short/long term projects. Cross-functional team- team that brings together employees from various departments to solve a variety of problems. The major distinction between a group & a team is in members attitudes & level of commitment. Product development team- cross functional in nature, group of employees who concentrates on innovation & the development cycle of new products.

Resume- a vital comm tool that provides a basis for judgment about a persons capabilities on the job. Targeted resume- a resume that reflects the requirements of a specific job listing Chronological resume- the traditional
