Buckeye Road In chapter 4 of Alfredo Véa Jr’s novel, La Maravilla, he describes in detail the characters that live in the small town called Buckeye Road located just outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Buckeye road is a desert town, where many people have found peace to live with one another in adobe and trailer homes. This is a town where people depend on one another, there is a market called Rainbo Market where you can purchase anything from cigarettes, to soda, and fruit. Everyone in Buckeye Road relies on this market to have anything they need. Which signifies how everyone must rely on this market to have everything they need in order to not leave town and by supporting this store it really helps Buckeye road survive. In the beginning of the novel Beto is asked by his grandmother (Josephina) to go buy a couple of groceries. While out on this errand he catches up with his friends Claude and Louis as they stops by at Mr. Cheung’s shop and then Beto asks, “If he may borrow a cup of rice?” Mr. Cheung gives the cup of rice to Beto and lets him know that he owes Josephina a hundred cups of rice. Beto quickly acknowledge his grandmother’s witchcraft work, by smelling the skunk fat and eucalyptus oil left linger in Mr.Cheung shop (73). This really goes to show how many people are grateful to have Josephina helping them as a witch doctor, since being such a small town Josephina is pretty much the only hope the town’s people have coming close to any type of doctor who is willing to help them without accepting anything in return. Beto continues to go buy the rest of his groceries at Rainbo Market, the owner Mr.Lee hands Beto an envelope requesting he give it to Josephina. Beto hands Mr. Lee a penny for postal fee, but Mr.Lee refused and is actually relieved to finally have gotten rid of the letter.
