During Susan Saulny’s article on America and mixed race, she writes of today’s young society being mixed. From being Scottish and Norwegian, black and white to Asian and white, you see it all today. Throughout the article, she speaks to many students from the University of Maryland who are involved in a group named the Multicultural and Biracial Student Association. They are of mixed races and are very proud to be and, in my opinion, that is what browning is all about.
One of the students who stood out for me was Paul Skym, who is Asian and white. In the beginning of the article, he asked another student, Ms. Wood, if she was mulatto. When she confirmed she was black and white, Mr. Skym responded with much excitement, “Now that’s what I’m talking about!” He is the true definition of someone being proud of their mixed race which what the group is all about. I believe he wished more people would stand up to who they are like Ms. Wood did.
Many people of mixed backgrounds have issues regarding the race portion of census. Michelle Lopez- Mullins , a junior and President of the Multiracial and Biracial Student Association is one of them. “If someone tries to call me black I say, ‘yes- and white.’ People have the right not to acknowledge everything but don’t do it because society tells you that you can’t.” As the president of the group, Ms. Lopez-Mullins she wants everyone like herself to have a say and that’s what her and the group are striving for.
