Sonny doesn’t choose the path that his older brother feels is the “right” one. As a result Sonny’s older brother doesn’t have much to do with him at times and at others try to take over Sonny’s life instead of trying to help him through his tough times. Sonny’s brother makes a promise with their mother and after a few failed attempts finally follows through with his promise after a tragic event in his life.
First, Sonny’s older brother believes that it is his duty to protect Sonny. When Sonny was home from the army, his mom told him a story about his dad and told him to “hold on to your bother and don’t let him fall, no matter what it looks like is happening to him and no matter how evil you gets with him.” The brother made the promise to do that, but fails on this promise when he goes back to the army. Once his mother dies he remembers his promises and tries to learn something about Sonny. Sonny tells him he wants to become a musician but his brother doesn’t think that is a career and becomes hard headed about it. After awhile the brother forgets his promise again and they go their separate ways. After Sonny gets put in jail and the brother’s daughter dies, the brother starts to protect Sonny again. He starts to reconnect with Sonny, but is always looking for signs that Sonny might fall back into drugs. In the end, the brother fulfils his duty of protecting Sonny.
Second, Sonny’s older brother’s daughter dies which is really hard on Sonny’s brother. Losing his daughter makes the brother realize that he doesn’t want to lose another loved one. “When I finally did, it was just after my little girl died; he wrote me back a letter.” The brother starts to get back into Sonny’s life and keeps in touch with Sonny while he is still in rehab. All in all, it has to do with
In “Sonny’s Blues”, James Baldwin explains how Sonny’s surroundings reflect upon him, causing himself to act the way he acts and the paths he chooses. Since around the 1930’s, the Harlem Renaissance took place and even when it ended, African American culture was very strong with music and arts. Around the 1950’s and 60’s, Harlem had a harsh environment for African Americans. There was a lot of racism, violence, and drugs. Plus, the housing projects that they lived in were run-down and shabby. This…
Alyssa Churchill HUM2453 Mr. Holman 5 April 2013 Bullying These two films touched me in a different way. “Bully” and “Bowling for Columbine” both express an issue that is most often swept under the rug. Most people don’t understand how much bullying effects a person and their family, these two films give you an inside look at the pain caused by bullying. The physical and mental abuse that kids undergo in school should not be tolerated. The writers of these two documentaries use similar devices…

Sonny’s music releases deeply embedded emotions in both the narrator and Sonny. Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is about two young brothers that are raised in a ghetto in Harlem, New York. The story is narrator by Sonny’s older brother and in the book both brothers tell of their hardships in Harlem. In the quote it says, “But the man who creates the music is hearing something else, is dealing with the roar rising from the void and imposing order on it as it hits the air” (Baldwin, 146). This quote…
Analysis of "Sonny's Blues" "Sonny's Blues" was written in 1957, but carries a vital social message in our society today of people trying to understand one another and find their identity. "Sonny's Blues" not only states dramatically the motive for Baldwin's famous polemics in the cause of Black Freedom, but it also provides an esthetic linking his work, in all literary genres, with the cultures of the Black ghetto (Reilly 56). To truly understand Baldwin's purpose in writing "Sonny's Blues" about…

1.“Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway has one of the most interesting point of views I have read in a short story. In school, the narration I have been taught is first person limited, having several personal narrate (unlimited), or third person narration (omniscient). While “Hills Like White Elephants” has omniscient narration, it is very detached. The whole story is told as though you, the reader, are a person sitting on a barstool eavesdropping on a conversation that an American is…
