Nursing has always been the career path of my interest. All the way up until my junior year in high school I wanted to be a doctor in the NICU, but this all changed when I got to actually experience different positions in the hospital. This is when I realized that working as a nurse in labor and delivery would be my future. I love working with people, especially in intense situations. Nursing requires many different characteristics. You have to be compassionate.
You have to show the mothers that you care, and that you are going to do any and everything you can for them and their newborn. As well as compassion, nursing requires critical thinking, communication, and decision making skills. You have to be very welcoming and respectful to make your patients feel comfortable, says Mandy Woe, a registered nurse in labor and delivery.
The need for nurses is growing rapidly every day. Half a million new positions are expected to be created in the decade between 2008 and 2018 (www.cpt12.org). Nursing is a career path that will always be needed. With that being said, if you are planning on becoming a nurse do not only make sure that you will be happy, also make sure that you will be successful. Nursing is a very promising career. The average salary for a labor and delivery nurse is $55,000 per year, but if you have more experience and higher degrees, you would be making closer to $70,000 per year (www.lpn.com).
