Through the last half of the 20th century there were a series of important, but relatively small, incremental steps in what we called logistics – how we got what we needed, where we needed it and when we needed it. However, in the last decade or so the science has changed just not incrementally but in its very nature. So much so that we now think of it as supply chain management (SCM). SCM is more than simply the what-when-where, it is the coordination of information using sophisticated technology including IT, GPS and tracking devices. The next few slides briefly introduces some of these concepts using something most of us have experienced – the auto collision repair industry aka the “body shop”.
1
Two views of the industry – the way it has traditionally operated with little or no SCM and the view taken in the last decade as the industry embraced SCM and technology
2
A traditional view of SCM focused on quantitative measures as shown above – primarily a “how many, how fast” approach. The newer approach still measures the quantitative metrics but is increasingly interested in managing the relationships and interactions in each link of the chain. For an interesting comparison look up
“balanced scorecard” on the Internet.

information, I had to evaluate the options. As I saw it I had three options, an additional personal computer, a laptop, or a tablet. I was really looking for mobility so the personal computer was out. Then I needed to evaluate the merit of a tablet vs a laptop. A tablet just didn’t seem to have the performance and the comfort that a full size laptop keyboard would offer while typing out an essay or completing an excel spreadsheet. Laptop wins, however, there are many different options for laptops…

Company profile and business context Missing office supplies slows down business. Tom Stemberg grew so tired of business supplies delays that in 1985 he left his career as a supermarket chain executive and turned entrepreneur. Stemberg struck upon the idea when his typewriter ribbon broke on Independence Day weekend as he was preparing a business plan and he was unable to find a store that stocked the ribbon. From his vantage point in the supermarket business, Stemberg also noticed that ballpoint…
House Foundation A foundation is the lowest part of the building structure. Foundations are generally divided into two categories: shallow foundations and deep foundations. Shallow foundations, often called footings, are usually embedded about a metre or so into soil. One common type is the spread footing which consists of strips or pads of concrete (or other materials) which extend below the frost line and transfer the weight from walls and columns to the soil or bedrock. A deep foundation is…
