Fatima Santamaria Ms. Anderson AP Literature 14 December 2012 “The Bluest Eye” Beefy Paragraph Toni Morrison composes a novel with themes of the standards of beauty including isolation experienced by many of the characters throughout the story. Morrison, by means of symbolism, uses dolls to illustrate Claudia’s frustration about why they are adored by everyone. Unlike Pecola, she does not see why these insignificant dolls possess such beauty symbolizing a misunderstanding between the racial differences of white and black little girls. Claudia uses some mild anger to describe how “the big, the special, the loving gift was always a big, blue-eyed Baby Doll” (Morrison 21). The reference to blue eyes indicates an awareness of the importance of blue eyes and how it’s defined as beautiful. Claudia refuses to accept the idea that this is what represented beauty; it angered her that this and only those who looked like this could be identified as beautiful. In fact she states that she “had only one desire: to dismember it. To see of what it was made, to discover the dearness, to find the beauty, the desirability that had escaped me, but apparently only me” (Morrison 22). The action of dismembering shows her violent thoughts, confused about why something so different compared to her is considered beautiful as well as questioning “what made people look at them and say ‘Awwwww’ but not for me?” (Morrison 22).
