Information: According to the book, “Why are so many black men in prison” by Demico Booth, he states, “Out of the more than 11 million black adult males in the U.S. population, nearly 1.5 million are in prisons and jails with another 3.5 million more on probation or parole or who have previously been on probation or parole”. Booth also states,” 1 out of 8 black men in there 20’s is in prison or in jail, and 1 out of 3 black males born today is expected to go to prison”. This is significant because it helps understand the mental psyche of a black male living in America today. This causes the “black man” to wake up on a daily basis feeling that he has to be extra superior to overcome the expectations that society places on him that he is an inferior minority.
Information on about another culture: Studies show that Latino convicts currently represent the largest ethnic population in the federal prison system. Latinos account for 40 percent of those convicted of federal crimes. Latinos made up only 13 percent of the United States. Studies also show that immigration offenses represented nearly one-quarter (24%) of all federal convictions. Among those sentenced for immigration offenses in 2010 80% were Hispanic. This is significant because it shows that over half the people in these crowded prison institutions are not even US citizens.
