Case study: Tropical Rainforests

1. Tropical Rainforest Biomes ‐ Where are they located?
2. What are the characteristics of Rainforests?
3. What are the main impacts on Rainforests?
4. How can we make a difference?
5. Fieldwork ‐ Rainforest impacts and management (Mt Tamborine)
Report 2 weeks

Assessment:
This unit will be tested using:
1. A Short Response Test (50 minutes) which will comprise of:
• Criterion 1 ‐ Knowledge and understanding of the content from the essential questions

in Biomes
• Criterion 2 ‐ Analytical Processes comprising of interpreting, analysing, applying and

making deductions from characteristics about Biomes.
2. A Report (350‐400 words) designed to evaluate the the best strategy(‘s) to protect the rainforest area of Mount Tamborine.
The report will comprise of:
• Criterion 3 ‐ Decision‐making processes
• Criterion 4 ‐ Research and Communication

DIMENSION TWO ‐ ACQUIRING AND INTEGRATING KNOWLEDGE
Much of the unit will require that students construct meaning, organise and recall key facts about Biomes. Their major case study will be Rainforest Biomes .
They will also be required to develop procedural knowledge of distinctively geographical skills such as describing patterns of spacial information relating to maps and graphs on a variety of biomes. In depth explanations of rainforests relating to characteristics of rainforests and the impacts of humans on rainforests will also be explored.

DIMENSION THREE ‐ EXTENDING AND REFINING KNOWLEDGE
In Biomes the focus will be: Deductive Reasoning and Analysis as these Dimensions are relevant to extending and refining the key knowledge and understanding of this topic.
Deductive reasoning will be used in Activity 4: What are the factors affecting biomes? Students will be asked to deduce a biome from the underlying conditions that relate
