Biomedical Example In 1995 Mickey Mantle received a liver transplant due to a failing liver caused by hepatitis and cirrhosis. He was a Baseball Hall of Fame center fielder for the New York Yankees. Even though the usual waiting period for a liver transplant in the United States is about 130 days, Mickey Mantle only had to wait two for the hospital to find an organ donor for him. It took only two days for the Baylor Medical Center’s transplant team to find an organ donor for the 63-year-old former baseball hero. The organ could have gone to someone who would have lived a long life with the transplanted organ. Any way you look at it, this is a controversial issue for everyone. There are also very good points to back up both sides to the issue as well. I think that if we followed the proper guidelines for organ donation but, if an emergency patient was to come into the hospital needing a transplant and was a proper candidate, being a hero, then that would be an acceptable situation to move them to the top of the list above people who have been waiting longer. I would not see why anyone would have a problem giving up their spot on the list to someone who already sacrifices their life every day to keep us safe from many terrors that we are often unaware of. Regardless, everyone should be treated fairly and given the best care while being seen at the facility they have chosen. Hopefully most of the people on the transplant can be taken care of in a timely manner and live long healthy
