Examine the reasons why some sociologist choose not to use questionnaires when conducting a research (20 MARKS)
There are many reasons on why sociologists choose to not use questionnaires when studying a trend or a research project. A reason behind that is that a questionnaire has low reliability because participants have a choice to lie as there is no certainty or way to know the truth. Another reason is that there is a lot of practical problem as the data collected from questionnaires is limited and usually just surface and shallow. The practical reason for this is that participants won’t finish or partake in a long survey so those who make questionnaires have to keep it very short and brief. Another reason is that the response rate is usually low even though questionnaires have the potential to collect from high percentages of the target audience many questionnaires are not finished as participants tend to only finish multiple answer questions instead of open answer questions which gives researchers the choice of breadth or depth which means; breadth means there will be a high amount of completed questionnaires but not a lot of real qualitative data, while depth means there will be a lower amount of completed questionnaires but a high amount of qualitative data which is a better quality of data, this another problem researchers face with questionnaires.
