Being in the North Eastern Hemisphere, Belarus tends to be warm and sunny in the summers. Minsk is the capital of Belarus and is home to over 1.8 million people. It is a modern international city that is located in the center of the country making it accessible to everyone who lives there. Minsk has an excellent transportation system that would be of great value should the games be held there. There is a large airport, several major train stations, a large underground metro network and a very well developed road system with many taxi companies. Also in Minsk are many fantastic hotels, restaurants and shops lining the streets for those attending the games. Most hotels such as the Crown Plaza are perfect for most budgets. Nearly every restaurant in Minsk serves Belarusian cuisine and if people prefer something else they can easily find an abundance of international foods. Belarusian dishes are potato based including potato dumplings, thick potato pancakes, and baked grated potato pie.
Safety of athletes and visitors in Belarus should not be of concern. The crime rate there is relatively low and crimes against foreigners are rare. The most common crime is robbery but taking sensible precautions should keep visitors safe. There are three types of police in Belarus. They are the traffic police, general police force and a state security force. All of the men and women that serve on these forces care greatly about the safety of the people living and visiting there. They undergo extensive training and security measures will be greatly increased to ensure the safety of everyone during the games.
