The Battle of the Alamo

Overview
The Alamo is located in San Antonio, Texas

and has a rich history behind it.
The biggest remembrance of the Alamo is the battle that took place during 1836.
The purpose of the battle was Texans fighting for independence from Mexico.

Texans
In the year 1803, 800,000 square miles of

land west of Mississippi was purchased by the
United States causing a dispute with Spanish authorities. In 1820, Americans began to colonize in
Texas.
Moses Austin and Stephen F. Austin were key individuals in colonizing Americans in Texas.

Mexicans
In the year 1810, Mexicans began to rebel

against Spain.
In 1821, Mexico gained independence from
Spain.
In 1830, the Mexican government passed laws in hopes of slowing down immigration of
Americans.
In 1834, Stephen Austin was arrested by
Mexican officials.

The Battle of Gonzales
The Battle of Gonzales was a major event that

lead up to the Battle of the Alamo.
In 1835, Texan troops, being outnumbered three to one, laid siege on the city of San
Antonio and captured the city due to superior shooting skills and better equipment.

The Alamo
The Alamo was used by the Mexicans to house

soldiers.
The Texans used it as an outpost to be an early warning lookout post for approaching enemies. On Feb 23, 1836 the Mexican Army was

spotted by Texan forces.
The Alamo at the time, had 150 soldiers and was under the command of William Barret
Travis.
Travis requested for reinforcements but only attained thirty-two additional men.
