Summary
Dave Diamond, a poor man, a carpenter’s assistant, is a small, wiry, quick-tempered individual who learns how to make every dollar count in his home. He has a son named Steve who is crazy about baseball.
When the Phillies comes to town to play an exhibition game with the home team, Dave refuse to take Steve to the game because it is expensive for them, but Steve has his mother on his side so they make a bargain: If Steve works hard helping his dad to make kitchen shelves after school he would earn an opportunity to go watch the game. Steve helps his father and earns the chance to watch the game, even though his father still seems to be less than thrilled. After the game, the Phillies’ outfielder, Eddie Condon, got lose from the crowds and is jostled, his cap falls at Steve’s feet. Steve grabs the cap and holds it tight. The outfielder decides to let Steve keep the cap when he sees his white face and pleading eyes despite his father’s disapproval.
One night, they walks home together from the shoemaker’s, Steve sees a rich boy wearing his cap. Dave asks the boy if they can meet with his father and negotiate with him for the cap. It is then that they meet Mr. Hudson. Dave gives Mr. Hudson the two dollars he asked for the cap, but Mr. Hudson buys it back again for twenty dollars. It makes Steve upset because he feels his father let Mr. Hudson take his cap away. Steve run back home and returns to his room. Dave follows
