• Anne Bronte’s novel, Agnes Grey, in 1847, was influenced by her two experiences working as a governesses.
• Anne Bronte died from Tuberculosis on May 28, 1849, in Scarborough,
Yorkshire, England with her sister Charlotte and a nurse friend.

AGNES GREY
PLOT SUMMARY
• Agnes Grey works as a governesses for two families, to help support her struggling family.
• First family was the Bloomfield’s, the children were abusive and unmanageable. Her employers giving her no authority, Agnes goes back home to the comfort of her mother.
• Agnes finds another job with the Murray family. Two girls, that Agnes attends too, Rosalie and
Matilda, both are selfish but are manageable. Matilda, tomboyish and Rosalie, flirtatious.
• Agnes gradually sees how wealth and upper-class status ruin social values.
• Agnes meets a young man named Edward Weston at a mutual church and starts to have feelings for him. • Agnes heads home for the death of her father. After the funeral, Agnes and her mother open up a school, leaving behind the Murray’s and Edward Weston.
• Agnes went for a walk by the sea and bumps into Edward Weston, their friendship grew, shortly after, married with three children.
