Nature of the problem

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal body cells. Eventually, a tumour develops and cells that would normally work together for the benefit of the tissue continue to multiply independently, starving other nearby cells of nourishment. There are two types of tumours this includes Benign tumour and Malignant tumours.

Nature of the problem

Diabetes is a hereditary or developed disease caused by improper functioning of the pancreas which secretes a hormone, insulin. There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 is an insulin-dependent diabetes
Whereas,
Type 2 is a non-insulin dependent diabetes
There is also,
Gestational diabetes which is a temporary diabetes that occur during pregnancy.

Extent of the problem (trends)

Type 1 is 10-15%
Type 2 is 85-90%
Gestational diabetes is a smaller percentage

The prevalence of diabetes is increasing and the age of diagnosis is getting younger. Diabetes has a higher mortality and prevalence rate for males than females.
In 2005 for men it was the 5th most common cause of death for men whereas woman it was the 7th top killer in Australia.

Risk factors

Type 1 diabetes still does not have an exact cause, but family history appears to be a factor.
Type 2 has strong links to lifestyle choices. Its related to overweight/obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet. It can also be related back to high blood pressure, the intake of too much saturated fat and refined sugar. High alcohol consumption is also a risk factor.
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy which is a high risk factor for females. Being aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander background or Pacific Islander, Indian subcontinent or Chinese culture puts an individual at high risk.
