Aung San Suu Kyi received education in Burma, India, and the United Kingdom. In 1988 Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Burma to take care of her dying mother, and then soon became involved in the democracy uprising that was occurring in the country. The military forces of the country responded to the uprising with heartless killing, with a result of up to 5,000 deaths of demonstrators on August 8, 1988. On September 24, 1988 the National League for Democracy (NLD) gave many speeches calling for freedom and democracy. Because of the increased pressure that was caused internationally, and by both the civilian uprisings and the National League of Democracy, the dictatorship ruling the country was forced to call a general election in 1990.
As Aung San Suu Kyi’s campaigning for the NLD increased, she and many others were imprisoned. Aung San Suu Kyi was banned from personally standing in the election, yet the NLD still won 82% of the seats in Parliament. Despite this, the dictatorship refused to hand over power and neglected the results of the election. After many years of being released and re-imprisoned, Aung San Suu Kyi was finally released from house arrest in 2002. She was then free to travel around the country. When she did so, she found that many people had been waiting patiently for her release and she began to hold meetings where tens of thousands of people showed up. Aung San Suu Kyi has endured many house arrests, arrests, and harassment from the regime because of her political activity. However, she has also won numerous international awards, such as the Nobel Peace Prize, the Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament, as well as the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom. She has called for the help of the people around the world to help many in the struggle for freedom in Burma. She uses the campaign line “Please use your liberty to promote ours.”
Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspirational figure because she devoted her life to advocate for the freedom of the people living in Burma. As stated in the description above, she suffered many consequences for her political action such as house arrests, arrests, and oppression from the dictatorial regime. She also suffered a lot of emotional trauma
