Temptations are unavoidable in the world we live in. The most that can be done about temptation is to prepare for it or challenge the temptation with what you know is right. In St. Augustine’s book, Confessions, Augustine writes about his experiences with temptation and what impact it had made on his life. Evidently, my own experiences with temptation could be reflected by Augustine’s, in the sense that I, too, have been caught up in difficult decisions because of my will to follow what pleasured me whether it was right or wrong. Making a parallel to the three temptations of the flesh, eyes and worldly designs Jesus had overcome, Augustine provides us with personal struggles that we, as humans, could relate to in our daily lives. First of all, Augustine had been tempted by his bodily desires just as Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread to nourish his body after long days without food. Christ overcame the temptation of the body by quoting a verse from the Bible saying, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’”. Unlike Christ, Augustine gave into his sexual desires; furthermore, his lust was the biggest burden he had before his conversion. He wrote, “The single desire that dominated my search for delight was simply to love and to be loved” (Confessions 24).
