The very common used drug, alcohol must be restricted to Australian’s over the age of 21. In recent years Australia’s culture has changed. It has changed to one of binge drinking and alcohol related violence. Something must be done to ensure that 18 year olds are no longer consuming alcohol. You may ask, why do I want the age do be lifted and what is the point? Well here is your answer: It has been scientifically proven that by the age 18 the brain is still not fully developed and when consuming alcohol at 21 the brain is much more developed and can sustain drinking. Alcohol can affect several parts of the brain, but in general, alcohol destroys brain tissue and depresses the central nervous system. Furthermore, alcohol terminates brain cells and unlike many other types of cells in the body, brain cells do not regenerate. Excessive drinking over a prolonged period of time can cause serious problems with perception and memory especially when the brain is feeble and not fully developed. The effects alcohol has on the body are immense; ranging from sleeping difficulties to liver diseases.
The longer we can abstain Australian teens from the consumption of alcohol the better. If the legal drinking age remains 18, many people in the future will suffer the repercussions of early drinking where the brain can’t handle such doses. In Australia at the age of 18, you are granted the right to drive freely, as it stands at the moment you are also legally allowed to drink at this age.
