1.Introduction

Pride and Prejudice is about the Bennets, a family with five daughters whose rather irresponsible mother’s only concern is to see them all well married. As the novel begins, Jane, the eldest daughter, soon falls in love with Mr. Bingley, a delightful and wealthy young man who rents nearby Netherfield. Elizabeth, the heroine of the novel, is drawn to his proud and even richer friend Darcy, in spite of a most unpropitious meering where he snubs her at a ball. Darcy in turn resists his attraction to Elizabeth and tries to prevent Bingley from associating with Jane. He thinks that the Bennet family is too common. Elizabeth is further disguised with Darcy because she believes that he has abused Wickham. When Elizabeth discovers that Darcy has interfered with Jane’s happiness, she roundly rejects his offer of marriage. Darcy writes her a long letter in which he reveals his qualms about the Bennet family and the truth about Wickham’s dastard behavior. When Wickham runs away with Lydia, Darcy tracks down the errant couple and pays all of Wickham’s debts in order to secure their marriage. This good deed, along with Elizabeth’s visit to Darcy’s home, Pemberley, where she learns only good of him, persuades her that she does indeed love Darcy. He and Bingley returns to Netherfield, propose to the Bennet sisters and are accepted with joy. This paper takes Pride and prejudice as an example to analyses the narrative art from the aspect of conversation, letter and third-person speech. The reason why Jane Austen’s works are so classical lies on the art of her narrative feature in writing novel. It leaves reader great impression of the pleasant countryside living and the men and women lived there. In one word, she writes of the times in which she lives, of the class of people with which she associates, and in the language which is usual to her as educated lady. In the novel, from the intricate dialogue and the ironic evaluation, we can clearly feel that the implied meaning and the literal meaning are so different, so it provides the possibility for us to appreciate Jean Austen’s writing style. Jean Austen’s contemporary——Charlotte Bronte, who is voicing a mid-nineteenth-century romantic position, objects to Jane Austen’s morality of self-discipline, good sense, and rational feeling, classifies her as a “society” novelist, not a novelist of humanity and criticizes the narrow rang of materials in pride and prejudice. However, the dramatic power of her characters leads some nineteenth century writers, including Macaulay and George Lewes, to regard her no less than a “Prose Shakespeare”; Brigid Brophy describes Jane Austen as “the greatest novelist of all time”. Virgina Woolf discusses Austen’s characterization, rang of subject matter and narrative viewpoint, comments on the social and physical restrictions of the environment in which Austen writes it, and asserts that Jean Austen’s “gift and her circumstances matches each other completely” From 1813 up to now, this novel has been a special attraction to readers and enjoyed enormous popularity.
